interview 2

Interview with Chris Zhang

For this interview, the first important element is the interview questions. The objective or purpose for my interview is to learn more cultures and to know more people or students from different cultures and to know whether they have encountered the cultural shock after they came to the United States. Most of the questions I prepared are related to the object- culture and different living styles, as well as some background information of the interviewee. These questions will guide the interviewee to compare and contrast the culture of their own country and U. S. In order to create a relaxed atmosphere for the interview, I chose the coffee shop in Atwood as the location. For future reference, a video-camera was also used to record the interview.

I approached my interviewees by being friendly. The interviewees I chose are all my friends who I have already known for a while. As an international student myself, I have spend more than two years in St. Cloud and made many international friends both from my classes and other activities. So, choosing informant from friends will be easier for me to talk to them and get genuine information. In the meantime, the interviewee will also be willing to open up to me with both positive and negative thoughts they have experienced for the same reason. Moreover, as the friendship between me and the interviewee, I would have at least two ways to contact them, for example by using email or cell phone. That is the method for me to secure three interviews.

I conducted the interview in the afternoon around 4pm. Before the interview is conduced, I told Chris I would love to interview her and the purpose of the interview is to learn about Chinese culture and her cultural experience in the United States. She told me that she would help me. After getting her permission, I called her and checked with her schedule and we make an appointment the day before. In order to create a relaxed atmosphere for the interview, I chose the coffee shop in Atwood as the place to meet. I showed her the questions and while the interview is going I recorded the process.

Chris Zhang is my interviewee. Her Chinese name is Congyu Zhang. She is from the eastern part of China. Her hometown is Tianjin which is a big business city. She came to SCSU in August 2008. As a graduate student, she chose Teaching English as a Second Language as her major because she wants to be an English teacher after she graduated. Besides taking classes from her program, she also works as a graduate assistant in College ESL program. She had taught English 102 Writing and Reading last semester and she is tutoring for other international students this semester. Before coming to the United States, She told me that she had never been away from her family and as the only child in her family as most of the Chinese students do, her family misses her very much, too.

From the interview, I learnt a lot about China and the culture. People think the Chinese people are conservative and quite but that is not the truth. They are warm hearted and always willing to help others. My interviewee told me that actually people do not talk too much in front of other people especially strangers because they have strong concept about “face”. Losing face means to be humiliated and insulted which would cause the Chinese people feel uncomfortable. As a result, being afraid to making mistakes, talking to others, being questioned will put them under the risk of losing face. Therefore, the Chinese people choose to “play safe” in public. They would prefer to interact with the people they are already familiar with and discuss the topics they are confident about. They spend more time on doing stuff than talking because that will lower the risk of losing face.
Moreover, family is a very important element in Chinese culture. Respecting the elderly and taking care of the youngsters in the family are the basic ideas in Chinese moral sense.

China is an upraising country in recent years. It is famous for the large population, numbers of companies, labor forces and high- technology inventions. It is located in East Asia and it is the third largest country in the area. Mandarin is the official and most wide spoken language in China. Most of the people are non-religious so religion is not a big component in Chinese culture. China has a long history which can be traced back by five thousand years. Family is very important for Chinese and the morality is highly valued by the people.

Review of The Killing Fields

The setting of the movie “the killing fields” is in the background of the civil war of Cambodia between the national arm and the communist Khmer Rouge during 1970s. The war was caused by the spillover form the Vietnam War. A journalist, Sydney Schanberg, was assigned to Cambodia to cover the conflict, and a local interpreter, Dith Pran, was closely working with him. They both witnessed the cruelness of the war and the miserable life the people had been through resulted from the war.

Basically, the movie can be separated into three parts. The first one is about how the two main characters met each other and how they worked together. The second part is that when the war is getting fierce, they had to find a place as a shelter. The third part is that, because of the United States citizenship, Sydney could find the save place to stay. However, Dith had to struggled himself to survive and escape form the bloody hell.

The most brutal scene in this movie is that when Dith tried to escape, he was trapped in the killing fields. Under the pressure of the Khmer Rouge, he kids got brainwashed. There is no kindness in their eyes. The only thing they can do is to use the knife in their hands and killing tons of innocent people

For me, personally, I think the movie is focused on a contrast, a sharp contrast between the merciless of the war and the strength of friendship. Especially at the end of the movie, the two main characters reunited after what they had been through, Sydney asked Dith “Do you forgive me?” Pran answers, with a smile, “Nothing to forgive, Sydney, nothing to forgive.” Then, the two embraced. I was so touched when I saw that scene. I felt that friendship could support anyone to go through any kinds of difficulties and crisis.

According to the article “A Crash Course on American Culture’’ posted on University Chronicle on February 8, 2010, the author described his own experiences working in University Chronicle and how do these experiences influenced his life in the United States. Moreover, they give him tons of helps, not only on his language studying but also culture adjustment. Presses and Democracies

The article “Presses and Democracies” was written by Daniel C. Hallin and Robert Giles ( Oxford/New York 2005) . Authors talked about some political figures on March 14, 1982 .Due to the process of globalization, the variety of News media is less dramatic than before. This chapter illustrates the differences of the media and the relations between the differences and other features in political and social systems by adopting and the concept of Four Theories of the Press. First of all, this chapter divides the western media systems in to three main models including, “The liberal model” which can be found mostly in the United States and other English speaking countries, “The polarized pluralist model” that exists in southern Europe and the rest of the world, and “The democratic corporatist model” that domains northern and central European counties. Then, the differences of the three models are also pointed according to the following four dimensions. “The emergence of a mass-circulation press ”,“ The degree and nature of state involvement in the media ”,“ The degree of political parallelism and “The degree of political parallelism”. In conclusion, the differences between the media systems diminished predominantly because of the growing influence of the liberal model that spread over Eastern Europe and Asia. Having said that; the disparity still exists. Political culture is one factor influencing this distinction. The countries of Europe have different political background and the process of democratization of the Media failed in Southern Europe.

Aladdin with Jasmine into the true love

Aladdin with Jasmine into the true love

A long time ago, there were two people and they loved each other. Aladdin, he is twenty-one and he is from Egypt, and Jasmine she is twenty and she is from the same country as Aladdin. The first time they met was in high school, one day one of Aladdin’s friends introduced him to her. After one week, he was sort of interested in her, and he got her cell phone number; then they started texting and talking on the phone. As the time went, he realized that his dream girl, which was Jasmine, was the right person for him, so he started asking her to go out. When he asked her to go out, Jasmine said, “I want to go to the museum.” In that time, there was a new museum that had opened and she wanted to go there. Unfortunately, he doesn’t like to go to the museum, so they get into a small argument. Aladdin wants to go to the river with her and enjoy the time over there by swimming, and cooking. At the same time, Jasmine wants to go to the museum and in those times the museum was having some stuff from all over the world and she got too interested to go. Suddenly, there were strangers walking by them. Aladdin stopped one of them and asked him to be the judge, so both of Aladdin and Jasmine were explaining to the stranger their problems. After they were done explaining to them the stranger started being calm for one second and talked to Aladdin. He said to Aladdin, “You should be a gentleman and go with her and after you are done, you could go.” At noon, when they got to the museum, Jasmine was so happy that she could see the arts from all the word. While they were walking, many things grabbed her attention. The first thing was an old carpet having beautiful coloring, the second thing she saw was the blue wallet and it had some coins inside. In that time, she was so curious to know where those coins came from, because it was big, had some pretty letters on it, and the letter was incredible. Also, a black African mask caught her eye. Jasmine looked around and realized that she totally dumped Aladdin, or in other words, since Jasmine got into the museum her interests made her forget about him, so she looked all over the museum for him. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find him and she realized that he is might be outside of the museum. Finally she found him outside and she asked him to go to the river and ride a canoe with her. In conclusion, even though both of them have different interests, they had good times.
